PMI: Navigating Creative Campaign Challenges

In partnership with Project Management Institute (PMI), PSB Insights conducted a survey among creatives (advertising and communications professionals) to understand what challenges they face in today’s increasingly complex marketing climate. The study uncovers how in-house marketing teams and agencies are leveraging the power of project management to navigate campaign challenges.

What we uncovered

  • Creative Campaigns Face Widespread Challenges: Nearly all (97%) agencies faced major challenges with creative campaigns in the past year, most commonly going over budget, overdue deadlines, and constraints on creativity.
  • Project Management Professionals are Key to Successful Campaigns: Project Managers often prevent or minimize challenges to keep campaigns on track and ensure they flourish. Ninety percent of creative campaign professionals agree that “great creative campaigns do not happen without great project management.”
  • Project Management Powers Creativity: In addition to keeping projects on track, project management professionals motivate project teams and help shape strategy. Marketing teams and agencies now desire  project managers to bring innovative thinking (67%), growth strategy (60%), and adaptability (57%) to the table, over more traditional skills like budget and resource management (49%).
  • Organizations are Investing in Project Management Professionals: In-house marketing teams and agencies are investing in their project management capabilities, focusing more on cultivating talent (60%)—training current staff and hiring new staff—than tools (38%).
